An Internet access provider is an organization that gives users the ability to utilize one or more Internet services such as e-mail, FTP, Gopher, Telnet or the World Wide Web. Access is usually obtained by connecting the user's computer to the provider's computer with a modem via a telephone call.
How do I find an Internet access provider?
The best place to look is in "The List" which is a directory of Internet access providers currently known to be active. As of now it contains over 3,000 providers. You can search this list by state, area code, and other parameters. You might also check C-Net's ISP list which includes ratings of the given Internet access providers.
